Residents and businesses in the Village of Mount Prospect are collaborating with Shedd Aquarium and joining the “Shedd the Straw” campaign to help Chicagoland reduce the use of plastic straws and other single-use plastics that pollute waterways, including the Des Plaines river and other local lakes, rivers and streams.

According to Shedd Aquarium, building a sustainable future means creating healthy environments for aquatic life to thrive. Plastic straws do not biodegrade, are nearly impossible to recycle, and, over time, break down into microscopic pieces of plastic that end up in our waterways. Wildlife such as Great Lakes fish, shorebirds, turtles, and our oceans’ sea lions, otters and whales can be harmed by plastics that end up in the environment if they become entangled in them or ingest them. The Shedd the Straw campaign challenges restaurants and businesses to remove single-use plastic straws from their daily operations, while keeping some straws on-hand for those that need them. This change will raise public awareness of plastic pollution, which endangers wildlife and aquatic environments important to all of us. It will also help reduce the amount of plastics used every day that pollute waterways; research shows that 11 million pounds of plastic enter Lake Michigan every year.

“As the Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to engage residents and businesses and work towards a greener Mount Prospect,” says Dawn Fletcher Collins, Executive Director of the Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce. Mount Prospect is the first Chicagoland Village to join the Shedd the Straw initiative; kicking off their campaign with an educational viewing of the film “STRAWS,” presented by the Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Prospect Public Library. The film left the audience with a clearer understanding of the problems caused by plastic pollution and empowered them to be a part of the solution.
