If you are curious about the “Alcatraz of the Midwest,” the old Joliet Correctional Center which has been closed since 2002, consider joining the Mount Prospect Historical Society on Saturday, May 11, for a day trip (via bus) to tour the ruined old facility.
The limestone Gothic-style correctional center was built in 1858 and it held thousands of prisoners over the following 140 years. It was also featured at the beginning of the 1980 movie classic, “The Blues Brothers” and was recently featured in a “Washington Post” article, detailing the facility and the new tours.
Participants will also have time to enjoy lunch on their own at one of several downtown Joliet restaurants, followed by a tour of the Joliet Area Historical Society. The bus will leave Mount Prospect at 9 a.m. and return at approximately 5 p.m.
Cost for this unusual adventure is $60 per person. Space is limited. To purchase tickets via PayPal, log onto www.mtphist.org. Or you may phone the Historical Society at 847/392-9006, Tuesday through Thursday during office hours, to reserve tickets and pay by credit card.
