There are almost 1,500 businesses in Mount Prospect that provide people with opportunities for employment or to “be their own boss”. These companies range in size from large corporations employing hundreds of people to home-based, one-person businesses. CareMark is the Village's largest employer. However, the growth of home-based businesses has accelerated. Median household incomes of those residing in the Village are well above average for the Chicago area, at $73,873.

Both manufacturers and service companies make up the business mosaic of the Village. Some businesses are internationally recognized, like Cummins Allison, while others are community focused, like award-winning Capannari's Ice Cream. Some have done business here for decades, like Keefers Pharmacy, Van Driels and Busse's Flowers, while other businesses, such as Bosch, Costco and Culvers, have decided to locate here more recently.

The community has a business friendly environment, with the Village and residents welcoming new enterprises. Many businesses are especially attracted to Mount Prospect because of it being centrally located in the northwest suburbs and having good transportation to the entire Chicago area and O'Hare International Airport. Equally important, businesses in the Village are supported by local organizations – notably the Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce, Business Forum, Sales Network, Professional Women's Network, Executive Roundtable – that work to help them grow and realize greater success. “Ribbon Cutting” events involving both the Chamber and Village officials are often held, especially for retail-oriented businesses, to give them exposure, publicity, get them off to a good start, and show them that they are a part of the community.
